Yankees GM Brian Cashman Calls Michael Pineda ‘Massive Decision Gone Wrong’

Heading into the 2012 season, the New York Yankees appeared to have one of the strongest starting rotations in the majors. But that was before prized offseason acquisition Michael Pineda was found to need season-ending shoulder surgery.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman spoke about Pineda's injury on Friday, and this time he didnt' seem so enthused about the outcome of the offseason trade that sent catcher Jesus Montero to Seattle.

Cashman had some choice words about the move, even questioning his own decision making in the process.

"This is a massive decision gone wrong right now," Cashman said in an interview with ESPNNewYork.com.

Cashman did take responsibility for the miscue, all but absolving the Mariners from any wrongdoing in dealing away damaged goods.

"The focus should be on me and the New York Yankees, not the Seattle Mariners," he said. "I'm responsible. I'm the decision-maker."

Pineda had a sensational rookie season in 2011, going 9-10 with a 3.74 ERA, and was expected to be the No. 2 on the Yankees staff behind ace CC Sabathia.
