But one baseball great is counting on selling his legendary memorabilia to pay for his grandsons to go to college.
Former Yankees pitcher Don Larsen threw baseball's only World Series perfect game in Game 5 of the 1956 Fall Classic. Now, 56 years later, he is auctioning off the uniform he wore during that game.
"I have thought about that perfect game, more than once a day, every day of my life since the day I threw it," Larsen told The New York Times.
Yogi Berra auctioned off the jersey and pants he wore in the game for $565,000. Larsen said he doesn't know how much his uniform will go for, but he reiterated its significance to his career.
"What the uniform actually sells for is not that important to me. Whatever happens, happens. I'm just hoping for enough to help the grandkids," the 82-year-old said.
Andrew Levy is Larsen's sports marketing agent. The two have turned over the uniform to Steiner Sports Marketing, which will post the memorabilia on an online auction on Oct. 8. That's the same day — 56 years ago — that Larsen threw the perfect game. Bids can be made via the Steiner Sports website.
