College Football's Decision to Go With Four-Team Playoff in 2014 Only Highlights Incompetence of BCS ModelCollege football is finally going to crown a national champion!

In 2014, that is.

A committee of university presidents has finally voted to do away with the Bowl Championship Series, but the rub of it is that the NCAA must play out its television contract. Which is, at its heart, the whole point of the new format.

It’s no stretch to suggest that the reality of a college football playoff would not have come about without the promise of an enormous payday for the universities and their football programs. If it was really about the integrity of the game and settling on a winner once and for all, then the NCAA would do the right thing and tear up that TV contract to start now.

But instead, we must deal with the charade of the current format for another 24 months. Which, if you take into account the four-year window of eligibility for most college athletes, is half a lifetime.

For two years, we still have the abomination of the BCS to deal with, but still, we’ll celebrate what progress we can. For two years, we can continue to gripe about the inherent unfairness of shutting out Boise State and TCU and letting Alabama get another shot at knocking off LSU from the mountaintop.

Instead of saying, “You know what? This is dumb. Let’s do the right thing by our student-athletes (cough) and do whatever it takes with our lawyers and ESPN’s to let the kids decide this on the field,” the NCAA punted. And it’s going to be two long, long years before they finally let the players get the ball back and run with it.

“Anyone who knows Boston, knows the Red Sox and anyone who was in that room [Monday] knows that the preponderance of people shouting in response to what the president said about Kevin Youkilis were saying ‘Yoooook’ and not ‘Booo,’ for God’s sake.”
