Darnell McDonald the Odd Man Out as Josh Beckett Returns From Disabled ListAs great as it's been to see just about every member of the Red Sox organization chip in as injuries have taken down outfielders and starting pitchers, the excellent effort from all corners is now creating roster questions as players come back from injuries.

Darnell McDonald became the latest Red Sox player to see his role on the team change. With Josh Beckett due back from the disabled list, McDonald was taken off the active roster on Saturday, according to a tweet from McDonald.

A team source later said McDonald had been designated for assignment.

McDonald called his time in Boston a "dream come true" and thanked Red Sox Nation on Saturday afternoon.

The roster move could be the end of McDonald's time with the Red Sox, as he is out of options with Boston. That means the Red Sox have 10 days to release him, trade him or put him on waivers, where he would likely be scooped up by plenty of other teams that need help.

McDonald is batting .214 this season with a .309 on-base percentage in 38 games this season.

Beckett is due to return to the rotation after missing some time with right shoulder inflammation. Moving McDonald to make a roster spot was the obvious choice, as the Red Sox have a bounty of help in the outfield, with Cody Ross, Daniel Nava and Ryan Kalish playing well, Brent Lillibridge in Boston thanks to the Kevin Youkilis trade, and Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford, Scott Podsednik and Ryan Sweeney making their way back from the disabled list themselves.
