Sunday was the day many were targeting to see David Ortiz back in the Red Sox lineup and occupying his customary role as the designated hitter.
Well, it appears that’s no longer slated to be the case, as Ortiz’ return will be pushed back. The big lefty can take batting practice without a problem, but still has issues running on his sore Achilles, as he is unable to get out of the batter’s box and run the bases the way he needs to. With third baseman Will Middlebrooks out for the season with a broken wrist, the Sox could sure use Ortiz’ bat in the lineup soon, but his return to the field remains up in the air.
Watch the video above to get an update on Ortiz and fellow injured Red Sox starter Daisuke Matsuzaka, who’s been working his way back into form during a rehab stint in Pawtucket, from The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham.
