The most important thing for any catcher-pitcher tandem is to be on the same page. If they're not and the proper communication isn't there, you can expect disaster to strike.
Fortunately for the Red Sox, catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia is taking steps to ensure he and his pitching staff are always in sync. Saltalamacchia has turned to Game Signs, which are bright-colored stickers that a catcher can place on his fingernails so that his signs are easily and effectively communicated to the pitcher.
NESN's Naoko Funayama recently caught up with Salty to discuss the benefits of using Game Signs, and the Boston backstop noted that they're both easy and effective for communicating with whoever is on the mound. In fact, he's already trying to get teammate Ryan Lavarnway to try out the cool new product.
