Report: Will Middlebrooks Out With Broken Wrist, Danny Valencia Likely to Replace Him on RosterWill Middlebrooks' stellar rookie year may have met its end.

Middlebrooks was drilled on the right wrist by a pitch in Friday night's win over the Indians and taken for X-rays. Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe now reports that Middlebrooks' wrist is broken, sidelining him immediately and likely leaving him out of action for the rest of the season since just seven weeks remain on the MLB schedule.

Danny Valencia, whom the Red Sox acquired in an Aug. 5 trade with the Twins, will likely be called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Middlebrooks' roster spot, according to Abraham.

Valencia has played in just two games for Pawtucket and has a .198 average this season. He wouldn't necessarily replace Middlebrooks on the field, as Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine used Pedro Ciriaco and Nick Punto all over the infield when shortstop Mike Aviles and second baseman Dustin Pedroia missed time with injury. Ciriaco, especially, has been a sparkplug, with a .341 batting average and loads of timely hits.

Middlebrooks played his first game for Boston on May 2 after an early-spring call-up and soon won himself the starting job at third base. He's been solid for the Red Sox all season, batting .288 with an OBP of .325 and a slugging percentage of .509. He also has 15 home runs and 54 RBIs in 75 games.
