The Red Sox are not for sale, according to the franchise's most powerful man.
Principal owner John Henry felt the need to call into WEEI on Thursday afternoon to address a FOX Business report that stated the club was looking into selling.
"The owners of the Boston Red Sox are mulling a potential sale of the storied baseball franchise, and have even begun quietly shopping the team to potential buyers," wrote Charlie Gasparino of FOX Business.
The report led Henry to send an email to reporters to deny the report.
"Tom [Werner] and I speak 7 days a week. A sale of any kind is so far from out thinking that it hasn't even come up apart from the technical planning issues involving death or disability. This report is completely without foundation. Regarding unnamed sources — any sale discussions that may have taken place were missing three key people — Larry [Lucchino], Tom and me. The Sox and any of the other components of FSG are not for sale and will not be for the forseeable future."
Henry then denied the report during an interview on Mut and Merloni on Thursday.
"Sometimes journalists have sources that are just completely off base and don't know what they're talking about," Henry said. "It's just so, I dunno, far apart or out of the horizon of things that have been going on here."
"I guess that's what I have to say about the interview."
Henry adamantly denied the report had no substance, insisting it was "just not true."
It also doesn't sound like there's interest from anyone inside the Red Sox ownership when it comes to selling.
"I don't think there's anyone in the partnership who's interested in selling any of the aspects of Fenway Sports Group."
In fact, Henry went as far as to say that it's not even on the club's radar.
"We are here for the long run."
