Fans go to all lengths to implore their teams to win.

But one kid who was rooting for the Phillies on Thursday night had an argument that can’t be topped.

As the Phillies led the Astros 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, a young fan in the stands held up a sign saying that if he could beat cancer, the Phillies should be able to beat the Astros.

The logic was flawless — except that Philadelphia was already ahead, and the fan’s sign may have led to the loss that followed. Houston scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth, pushing the Astros past the visiting Phillies to win 6-4.

The Phillies have had an up-and-down season, fading early and dealing some of their key players as making the playoffs appeared increasingly improbable. But Philadelphia has fought back to a 73-72 record going into Saturday — just three games behind St. Louis (76-69), which would have the second wild card spot in the National League if the season were to end today.

If the Phillies are going to eke into the playoffs, though, they need all the wins they can get — especially against a team like the Astros (46-99). All it takes is a few runs and some defense. It’s not like they’re beating cancer or anything.

But the real question is: Are you sorry for that poorly designed T-shirt, Jose Canseco?
