Ryan Kalish Back in Lineup as Designated Hitter While Red Sox Return From Long Road TripFor a team that has spent much of September evaluating its young players, the Red Sox appear to be eschewing that strategy in favor of some veterans against the Blue Jays.

Jose Iglesias and Ryan Lavarnway are nowhere to be found in the Red Sox starting lineup for Friday night, with Mike Aviles and Jarrod Saltalamacchia instead occupying the shortstop and catchers positions, respectively.

That's not to say that the Sox aren't looking to get some younger guys reps, however. Ryan Kalish is back, playing designated hitter and batting ninth, and although Pedro Ciriaco and James Loney aren't prospects per se, they will get a chance to showcase themselves against Toronto.

They'll face Blue Jays starter Henderson Alvarez, a promising young starter who could be running out of gas towards the end of his first full major league season. While his overall numbers are respectable, the 22-year-old has gone 0-2 in his last three starts, with an ERA of 11.37 over that span.
