The Boston Red Sox have made headlines over their pursuit of Mike Napoli, Nick Swisher and Giancarlo Stanton recently, but that doesn’t mean they’re only concentrating on offense.
The Red Sox have been calling agents about starters they would be able to sign to shorter-term contracts, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. The team does not want a pitcher that would be tied up for six or seven years, and could be looking at more of a No. 5 starter than a top-of-the-rotation guy.
Some names that Cafardo mentioned the Red Sox could go after were Edwin Jackson and Anibal Sanchez. Cafardo specifically said the Sox likely won’t be going after a Zack Greinke-type.
