Ben Cherington Not Ruling Out Bringing in Experienced Pitcher, But Likes Red Sox’ Internal Options (Video)

The Red Sox’ roster is taking shape with pitchers and catchers scheduled to report to spring training in less than a month. But general manager Ben Cherington isn’t ruling out adding some pieces between now and then.

Cherington said before Thursday’s Red Sox Town Hall that he’s looking at some bench options, specifically a left-handed bat who can play both the outfield and first base. The assumption is that this player would back up both Mike Napoli — assuming he signs — and Jonny Gomes, both of whom are right-handed and have fared better against left-handed pitching throughout their respective careers. It sounds like whoever assumes that backup role could come from outside the organization, or the job could be won during spring training.

Cherington was also asked about the Red Sox’ pitching staff and whether the emergence of some of the organization’s young hurlers lessens the emphasis placed on bringing in veteran pitchers to compete in the spring. The Red Sox GM acknowledged that he is a bit more confident in the young guys now than a year ago, but he also didn’t rule out potentially adding an experienced pitcher if he thinks it’s a good fit.
