Count Mike Napoli as among those who were very surprised at the direction his contract negotiations turned this offseason.
Before taking a physical with the Red Sox, Napoli had no idea that he had a degenerative condition in his hip, and there’s a very good reason for that — he has never suffered a symptom. Nonetheless, over the course of the two months between reaching an initial agreement with the Red Sox and finally putting pen to paper, Boston’s new first baseman sought the opinion of at least six doctors. His current treatment is medication and rehab, not surgery, so the Sox hope he can lift many a ball over the Green Monster in 2013.
Check out Napoli chatting with Peter Gammons and Tom Caron about the injury and subsequent fallout in the video above.
