NHL Leaving Itself Open to Conspiracy Theorists With Selective Enforcement of Discipline in Playoffs (Video)

Andrew Ference was suspended for Game 2 of the Bruins-Maple Leafs playoff series for a check to the head of Mikhail Grabovski. However, Toronto captain Dion Phaneuf did not even have a hearing with NHL suspension honcho Brendan Shanahan after a questionable hit against Daniel Paille.

Add that to the lack of discipline for anyone involved the Senators-Canadiens brawl on Sunday night, and the league is suddenly entering dangerous waters. The inconsistent nature of when a suspension is or isn’t doled out has the potential to poison fans against the league’s authorities, and cynical conspiracy theorists can have a field day with the decisions coming down from Toronto.
