FORT MYERS, Fla. — Henry Owens squared off with some big boppers in his first live batting practice session of Boston Red Sox spring training.
Owens, ranked the No. 2 prospect in the Red Sox organization, faced Will Middlebrooks and Jonny Gomes on Friday as manager John Farrell and the coaching staff tried to gauge the status of their pitchers. Farrell said after the workout that an emphasis was placed on throwing multiple pitches for strikes.
Owens might not factor into the Red Sox’s major league plans in 2014, but the tall left-hander certainly is making waves in the Red Sox system. The 21-year-old was a strikeout machine at High-A Salem and Double-A Portland last season, and his ceiling perhaps is the highest of any of the organization’s young starting pitchers.
