Despite injuries to several stars on the Red Wings squad this year, Detroit heads into the postseason for the 23rd consecutive season.
The Red Wings rank second in the NHL in man-games lost to injury, with Daniel Alfredsson, Johan Franzen, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg all missing significant time this season, but it has been the young guns who have stepped up in the veterans’ absences.
The “kids” as head coach Mike Babcock refers to them, includes 24-year-old Gustav Nyquist and 23-year-old Tomas Tatar. The two dynamic wingers have picked up the weight offensively, combining for 47 goals this season.
