Christian Vazquez isn’t the only star catching prospect for the Boston Red Sox.
Blake Swihart is also starting to make a name for himself down in the minors. The 22-year-old catcher is on fire for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, and if he keeps it up, it won’t be a surprise to see him as a September call-up next month in Boston.
Swihart has improved tremendously over the past couple of years defensively. In 2012 at Greenville, he threw out 31 percent of all runners, but that number has increased to 47 percent this year.
“I know at first my arm was probably long, really slow,” Swihart said. “In Greenville I didn’t have the best throw-out percentage, but I just kept working on it and now it feels pretty comfortable.”
Swihart is batting .300 in Portland this year along with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs.
