If Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo’s reported seven-year, $72.5 million deal with the Boston Red Sox holds up, he likely has Yoenis Cespedes, Yasiel Puig and Jose Abreu to thank.
The terms would be the highest total dollar amount for a free-agent amateur, and that’s probably due to the success of the MLB’s most recent Cuban defectors. Cespedes was the first big star to come out of Cuba for the Oakland Athletics, and the contracts have only been getting bigger since his four-year, $36 million deal.
