David Ortiz launched his sixth home run of the 2016 season, which he announced last offseason would be his last, in a 5-2 win against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.
The homer was the 509th of the 40-year-old’s career, moving him into a tie for 25th all-time with Gary Sheffield. It also was Ortiz’s 451st homer in a Red Sox uniform, just one shy of tying Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski for second in team history.
When asked about the accomplishment and what it means to be mentioned in the same sentence as such legends, Ortiz quipped, “You know what’s happening when that’s happening? (I’m) getting old, man.”
NESN’s Guerin Austin had more from Ortiz on “Red Sox First Pitch.” Check it out in the video above.
