Yankees’ Gardner on DL with Broken Thumb

The Yankees will be without an important piece of their offense and running game for a few weeks. Outfielder Brett Gardner was placed on the disabled list after breaking his thumb in the Yankees' 6-4 loss to the A's on Saturday.

Gardner broke his thumb sliding into second base to break up a double play in the first inning of Saturday's game. However he stayed in the rest of game, recording an RBI triple and making two diving catches in center field.

In 85 games for the Yankees this season, Gardner is hitting .275 with three home runs and 20 RBIs. With 20 stolen bases, being caught just five times, Gardner leads the Yankees in stolen bases.

The Yankees will need to call up an outfielder to replace Gardner on the active roster, as there isn't another outfielder on the club's 40-man roster. The likely options are Austin Jackson, Shelley Duncan or John Rodriguez.
