Linebacker Prescott Burgess has not spent one second on the field for the Patriots this season, yet he’s gotten more attention than a handful of players on the 53-man roster.
Now, it appears as though Burgess is gone for good. The Ravens have signed their former player from the Patriots’ practice squad, according to the National Football Post.
Burgess was traded from Baltimore to New England in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick. The Patriots then cut Burgess to make room for defensive tackle Terdell Sands. Burgess cleared waivers and signed him to the practice squad.
Burgess’ arrival came with much fanfare because he wore No. 93 — the first player to do so since Richard Seymour was traded in the final week of the preseason. Burgess was also thought to have knowledge of the Ravens’ system, which would theoretically help the Patriots.
The Ravens, who initially were going to waive Burgess, have a new need at the linebacker position after Brendon Ayanbadejo was injured in Sunday’s loss to the Patriots. ESPNBoston’s Mike Reiss reports that the Ravens wanted to make the move last week, but NFL rules prohibit teams from signing practice squad players from teams they are facing that week.
The Patriots, meanwhile, could be getting reinforcements at linebacker, with Jerod Mayo returning to practice last week and Junior Seau reportedly close to signing with the team.
