Lakers guard Shannon Brown is a student of the game of basketball, which makes perfect sense given his academic approach to the slam dunk contest during this year's NBA all-star weekend.
The 24-year-old Brown has been brainstorming ideas for the dunk competition, but his focus has not swayed from the Lakers' team goals.
"From the first time people started speculating and started saying I should be in the dunk contest, my brain got to working a little bit in what I think I should do," Brown told the Los Angeles Times. "I’ve been thinking about it a little bit, but I’ve been trying to focus on the team also."
It has been nearly one year since the Lakers acquired Brown along with forward Adam Morrison in a trade with the Bobcats. Following the acquisition, the Lakers won the 2009 NBA championship and have the best record in the NBA this season.
Lakers head coach Phil Jackson sees Brown as a hard worker.
"He puts in the effort, and it’s paying off for him," Jackson told the Times.
Brown is humbled to be in the dunk contest. That was apparent in his speech following the announcement.
"First, I'd like to say thank you to everybody that campaigned for me, everybody that voted for me, everybody that had my back this whole time," Brown told Hoops Vibe. "It's going to be something to watch."
Brown also went on to thank former Celtic Mikki Moore, one of many NBA players Brown has posterized with his dunks.
"I'm going to the drawing board now," Brown told The Press Enterprise. "I've got a couple ideas in my head. I'm not going to give them away. I don't know where he [Mikki Moore] is or where he's playing today, but I appreciate him, too."
