Peter Gammons: New Deal With Josh Beckett Will ‘Probably’ Get Done

Peter Gammons: New Deal With Josh Beckett Will 'Probably' Get Done Some good news emerged from Fort Myers on Monday: The Red Sox appear to have started contract talks with ace Josh Beckett.

Though Beckett has maintained that he won’t let the discussions become a distraction while he still has pitching to do, it certainly would be a relief to see Boston come to terms with him before he hits the free-agent market at the conclusion of the 2010 season.

NESN insider Peter Gammons told Tom Caron that the two sides could reach a deal, as long as one small factor doesn’t become an issue.

“The issue is going to be, can the Red Sox get Beckett to agree to the medical waiver?” Gammons said. “[John] Lackey has it, J.D. Drew has had it — it’s something that John Henry feels very strongly about, and I’m not sure Beckett’s going to go for it. So it’ll be very interesting to see how the language goes.”

Still, despite any hangups, one thing is for sure:

“Josh Beckett wants to stay in Boston,” Gammons said. “There’s no doubt about it.”
