Boston Derby Dames Hosting Some of New England's Toughest Women If you enjoyed watching Johnny Boychuck knock Matt Ellis into another time zone in Game 3 of the Bruins-Sabres series, then it is very possible that you could quickly become a fan of roller derby. These girls don’t mess around, and if you are in their way, you may end up on your back wondering what just hit you.

The rules are simple … sort of.

There are two 30-minute halves, and each half is divided into individual jam sessions. Each team has four blockers and one jammer. The jammers are the point-scorers. Every time they pass an opposing team member, their team gets a point. This is when things get interesting — the girls will do just about anything to keep their competitors from passing them. The result is a fast-paced, entertaining bout between two highly competitive teams.

The Boston Derby Dames call the Shriners Auditorium in Wilmington, Mass., their home. Four teams are in the Boston group: the Boston Massacre, Cosmonaughties, Nutcrackers and Wicked Pissahs. If you like the names of the teams, you’ll like the names of the skaters even more. Some of the ones that stand out are Assault N’ Flattery, Dixie Kicks, Floral Derangement, Killary Clinton, Lady Gag Ya, Luv-Lee McDeath, Malicen Thunderland and Speed Metal (you’ll learn about her nickname in the video below).

The Massacre are the travel team, and this past weekend, they took on the visiting Philadelphia Liberty Belles. On this particular night, Philly came away on top, but Boston isn’t giving up hope.

“Well, we did the best that we could, but we couldn’t pull out the win,” said Claire D. Way after the bout. “We will learn from our mistakes and next month we can only hope to be stronger.”

On May 15, they will host the Oly Rollers of Olympia, Wash., in Wilmington. Get your tickets early, as the Massacre have sold out their first three bouts of the year. You can find more information at bostonderbydames.com.
