Jason Donald Wishes He Broke Up Armando Galarraga's Perfect Game More Conventionally “He was just doing his job.”

That’s how Heidi Watney described Cleveland Indians shortstop Jason Donald when he broke up Armando Galarraga‘s perfect game attempt last Wednesday with an infield single.

“It’s a crazy game, and crazy things happen,” Donald told Watney on Red Sox Gameday Live.

With two outs in the ninth inning, after Galarraga had retired the first 26 Indians hitters of the game, Donald hit a groundball to the right side.  First baseman Miguel Cabrera cut the ball off, spun and threw to Galarraga who was covering first.

Umpire Jim Joyce called Donald safe, even though replays clearly showed that Galarraga had recorded the out, and in fact the perfect game.

So, even if Donald doesn’t make an impression on the game with his stats, he will always be remembered for his role in one of the most bizarre plays in baseball history.
