Umpire Jim Joyce Blows Perfect Game for Armando Galarraga

Umpire Jim Joyce Blows Perfect Game for Armando Galarraga “That is the question that all of America is discussing,” Tom Caron said on Red Sox GameDay Live.

TC, of course, was referring to whether Cleveland’s Jason Donald was safe at first with two outs in the ninth inning. Umpire Jim Joyce called Donald safe, preventing Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga from notching a perfect game.

“This will be remembered more because Jim Joyce — I mean, he admitted after the game he blew the call,” said NESN baseball analyst Peter Gammons.

Gammons relayed he texted Donald after the game, with the rookie second baseman telling Gammons he wished “he had hit a line drive for a base hit because then everybody would be a lot happier,” Gammons said.

Perhaps most impressive about the event that saw fans and Tiger players up in arms was the reaction of Galarraga, who simply smiled and went back to the mound after the blown call. He retired Trevor Crowe to finish the game, then accepted Joyce’s apology after the game.
