Vernon Davis was picked sixth overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2006, making him one of the highest-selected tight ends of all time.

Now, he will be adding highest-paid tight end in history to his resume, as Adam Schefter has tweeted that Davis and the 49ers have agreed to a five-year, $37 million extension, including $23 million guaranteed.

Despite his physical gifts, he was somewhat of a disappointment for his first few seasons, lacking mental focus and failing to become the go-to receiver that he was expected to be.

Coach Mike Singletary seemed to turn him around with one abrupt moment. In week six, Davis slapped Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Brian Russell, earning a 15-yard penalty and a benching from coach Singletary.

Thereafter, he put it all together.

In 2009, Davis caught 78 catches and 13 touchdowns, leading the league in the latter category among tight ends.

Davis is now one of the offensive captains for a 49ers team that many expect to make a playoff run this season.
