Report: Donald Fehr Close to Assuming Role of Head of NHLPA

Donald Fehr was just a young lawyer in the 1970s when he began working on arbitration cases for the MLB Players Association.

By 1986, he was in charge of the MLBPA, a post that he held until 2009. During Fehr's tenure, baseball stopped three times, including the infamous 1994 canceled season.

After 2009, Fehr took up a position as an advisor to the NHL Players Association, and it appears that he will now likely become the Executive Director of that organization, Fanhouse reports.

The post has been vacant since Paul Kelly was removed in 2009.

Now the Executive Board of the NHLPA has voted to approve his appointment to that position.

"I am gratified by the Executive Board's vote, and I look forward to
meeting all the Players at team meetings which begin later this month," Fehr said.

The former MLBPA head must still be approved by the association's full membership at month's end.
