John Daly: ‘I Played Better When I Was Drunk’

It’s been two years since John Daly has had a drink, and by the sound of it, it’s been two very, very long years.

As he was signing copies of his book, “My Life In And Out Of The Rough,” at the Rock Barn and Country Club in Conover, NC, the golfer was asked what he’s learned about himself through the years.

“That I was happy when I was a miserable drunk. I played better when I was drunk,” he told the Charlotte Observer. “I don’t know.

“Sometimes you point your finger at yourself,” he added. “You can only point your finger at yourself so many times. You look back at yourself and write the pros and cons of your life and the pros outweigh the cons.”

Daly flew in from Las Vegas, where he finished 73rd at the 2010 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open over the weekend.

“I look at myself and I’m not that bad a guy,” he explained. “I always thought I was the reason the divorces came. I look back and it takes two to do that. It wasn’t all my fault. I played a part in it but I can’t keep blaming myself for everything.

“You take [life] as it comes and move on,” Daly said. “It’s just life.”
