FOXBORO, Mass. — Patriots running back Fred Taylor said Friday afternoon he still wasn’t sure if he'd be called upon to play Sunday in Pittsburgh.
Taylor practiced three times this week after missing more than six weeks with a toe injury on his left foot, but he has preached caution regarding his availability for the game against the Steelers, who have the league's top-ranked run defense.
When asked if he'd be able to play Sunday, Taylor smiled and said, "You're talking about the Steelers, man, in a good sense, in a good sense. You've got to want to play against that team. It's not my call, to answer your question. I think that you'd probably be better off saving that one for coach [Bill] Belichick."
It's actually quite likely the coaching staff still doesn’t know if Taylor will be active for the game. Typically, they'll wait to see how an injured player responds after going through a week of practice before making that call. With the Patriots flying to Pittsburgh on Saturday, Belichick and his staff have a little more time to weigh their options.
"I'm not sure how that whole decision-making process comes about," Taylor said, "but I'm sure I'll be hearing something in the near future."
