The Canadiens added some depth to their corps of defensemen on Tuesday, but they’re also hoping their newest acquisition makes an impact on offense.
The Habs acquired 26-year-old James Wisniewski from the Islanders in exchange for a pair of draft picks. Wisniewski has been solid this year on the New York blue line, especially offensively. In 32 games, he has 21 points, 18 of those coming by way of assist.
The 2002 fifth-round draft pick of the Blackhawks set a career high in points last season with 30 as a member of the Ducks. His arrival comes a few weeks after the Habs likely lost defenseman Andrei Markov for the season with a knee injury.
In exchange for Wisniewski, Montreal agreed to send the lowly Islanders a compensatory second-round pick in the 2011 draft, as well as either a fifth-round pick in 2012 or a fourth-round pick in 2013.
