A skiers' worst nightmare came to life on Tuesday, when a chairlift at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine was derailed, sending several people to the hospital.

According to The Boston Globe, six skiers were sent to the hospital with "non-life-threatening injuries" after five chairs fell 25 to 30 feet to the ground.

The lift riders whose chairs didn't derail had to sit for as long as two hours as rescue crews went to work to retrieve them. While waiting, the riders were forced to endure wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph.

The lift in question was closed in the morning due to high winds but was opened around 10:30 a.m., according to the mountain's Twitter feed.
