Tim Wakefield Preparing for Starter’s Role If Needed, But Willing to Help Red Sox Win ‘In Any Capacity’

Tim Wakefield was a bit stunned when he was transferred from the starting rotation to the bullpen last season, but he'll be prepared for whatever role that comes his way in 2011.

Wake sat down with Peter Gammons and Tom Caron during Red Sox Live on Wednesday to discuss the upcoming season, and the laid-back knuckleballer said he just wants to help the Red Sox win "in any capacity" he can.

While it's assumed that Wakefield will start the season in the bullpen, the Red Sox' staff is preparing him for a starting role, just in case the situation arises where they need him in the rotation. If he's not needed in the starting five, Wake will be prepared for multiple innings out of the bullpen, a valuable tool for the Red Sox in front of Daniel Bard, Bobby Jenks and Jonathan Papelbon.

To hear the entire interview with Wakefield — where he also discusses the franchise record that sits just 13 wins away — check out the video above from Red Sox Live.
