Brad Marchand Initially Surprised Upon Learning of Scheduled Hearing With League for Hit on R.J. Umberger

When Brad Marchand hit R.J. Umberger on Tuesday night, the Bruins forward didn't think much of it. He wasn't given a penalty, and there was no talk of the hit after the game. With that in mind, Marchand woke up on Wednesday surprised to find out that the league wanted to talk to him.

Marchand was notified on Wednesday morning by his agent that the rookie would have a hearing for his hit on Umberger, something that caught Marchand completely by surprise.

"It completely caught me off-guard," he said on Wednesday. "I came in and all the guys said it was all over NHL Network. I had no idea. I didn't think it was that bad of a hit. At the time, there was no talk about it after the game, so initially, it couldn't have been that big of a deal."

Marchand also stressed to reporters that it wasn't his intention to hit Umberger up high, but he does understand after seeing the hit, why the league would want to talk with him.

To see all of what he had to say, as well as hear from Hall of Famer Brian Leetch on the Bruins' recent struggles on the power play, check out the video above.
