Johnny Damon Surprised, Joe Maddon Disappointed by Manny Ramirez’s Sudden Retirement

Manny Ramirez's sudden retirement took the entire baseball world by surprise, even members of his own team.

Johnny Damon was looking forward to playing another season with Manny, as the former Red Sox teammates were reunited in Tampa Bay during the offseason. Damon said he was surprised by the abrupt change to the Rays' roster, and wishes Manny all the best in his retirement.

"It's very sad what happened with Manny," Damon said before Monday night's matchup at Fenway Park. "I wish him nothing but the best. He was a great teammate of mine and he was a great player. I was just hoping we would continue to have all the fun that we had when we had the press conference, and for it to end so abruptly for the reasoning — it's sad."

Damon wasn't the only one disappointed by Manny's decision. Rays manager Joe Maddon was also disappointed that he didn't' have more time to work with Ramirez and he'll miss him in the cleanup spot in the Rays' lineup.
