Red Sox Moving Toward Catching Platoon for Time Being As Jason Varitek Sees Increased Action

The Red Sox made sure there were no questions this spring about who they would use as a starting catcher. Throughout spring training, Jarrod Saltalamacchia was "the guy" behind the plate, not Jason Varitek.

Saltalamacchia's early struggles at the plate may have been overlooked had it not been for the fact that the pitching was struggling as well. And as pitchers like Josh Beckett and Daisuke Matsuzaka pitched gems with Varitek behind the plate, the playing time is starting to become split.

The Boston Globe's Peter Abraham spoke about the playing time split behind the plate on Red Sox First Pitch, and he said he seemed to think that while Varitek is seeing more time as of late, the job is still likely Saltalamacchia, especially when you factor in the captain's age.

To hear what he had to say, as well as his thoughts on Jed Lowrie's place in the lineup and an update on Matt Albers, check out the video above.
