Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez doesn’t always get away with breaking the rules, but he may have avoided a recent punishment by the New York Police Department.
According to the New York Daily News, Rodriguez is among a number of New York celebrities, including the late George Steinbrenner and rapper/Nets owner Jay-Z, who have avoided fines and had traffic tickets “disappear.”
Rodriguez reportedly was pulled over in 2009 for speeding on the West Side Highway near West 57th Street. The infielder was initially issued a ticket, but a NYPD sergeant eliminated the penalty later on, sources say.
These details have emerged as an ongoing investigation by Bronx prosecutors, and the Internal Affairs Bureau revealed nearly 40 cops voided tickets, lost proper paperwork and missed court dates all to benefit celebrities.
“It was very easy for a big name to walk away from a summons,” a source said, “[Celebrities] have contacts everywhere. There’s an eagerness to help because of who they are.”
Yankees officials and Rodriguez’s spokeswoman declined to speak about the matter.
