The NHL's "History Will Be Made" commercials have left chills running down the spines of hockey fans throughout the 2011 playoffs. From speechless captains to history-making statements, the commercials are doing a great job of promoting the run for a Cup.
One of the "History Will Be Made" commercials features the 1972 Bruins.
Led by John "The Chief" Bucyk, the '72 Bruins finished first in the East in the regular season, as Phil Esposito led the team in points with a line of 66-67-133.
The Bruins rolled over the Maple Leafs and Blues in the first two rounds of the playoffs 39 years ago, and behind Bobby Orr's game-winner in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Bruins defeated the New York Rangers in six games.
Bucyk, the team's senior alternate captain (Boston's captaincy was vacant), was the first Bruin to raise the Cup in 1972. At six feet tall, he hoisted the trophy high above his head, and the Bruins celebrated their second title in three seasons.
Now, the Bruins have a chance to claim the sixth cup in the storied franchise's existence.
If the Bruins close out the Canucks, Zdeno Chara, the B's current captain, would be the first Bruin to hoist the trophy this year. Chara stands 6-foot-9. Having the Cup raised to its highest level in team history, in a city dying to reclaim hockey's greatest prize, would be fitting.
History is indeed back in Boston.
