Before he was a six-time NBA champion, Michael Jordan was just like any other high school boy — one who didn’t pay attention in science class and was awkward around girls.
Letters of Note has obtained a scan of an old love letter that an 18-year-old Jordan wrote during chemistry class to a high school sweetheart. In the letter, written on old notebook paper, Jordan asked forgiveness from “Laquette” after upsetting her for some reason.
“I felt that I made you look pretty rotten after the last night,” he wrote. “I want to tell you that I am sorry.”
And of course, he did his best to work his way out of the doghouse with compliments. “Everyone think [sic] you are a very pretty young lady,” he tells the mystery girl, “and I had to agree because it is very true. Please don’t let this go to your head. (smile).”
Yes, he actually wrote “(smile).” Emoticons couldn’t come fast enough for His Airness.
The letter was transcribed for Letters of Note with help from Lelands, a sports memorabilia auctioneer. It was sold for a winning bid of $5,100.66 back in 2004.
Lelands notes that the story does have a happy ending. A picture of Jordan and “Laquette” at prom was reportedly included with the letter at the auction.
