Red Sox’ Trade Deadline Philosophy Focuses on Different Needs Every Year

Several trade deadline deals in the past have helped the Red Sox strengthen the team for the postseason or to lay the groundwork for future seasons.

Such a deal could be as minor a piece as for a reserve outfielder and pinch runner like Dave Roberts in 2004, or a future starting catcher like Jarrod Saltalamacchia in 2010.
