John Lackey Says He Wasn’t Trying to Hit Francisco Cervelli, But Admits to Trying to Knock Catcher Down

John Lackey got burned when he threw Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli a pretty fat 3-1 pitch early on in Tuesday's game. Not trying to walk the nine hitter, Lackey "gave in" and it ended in him serving up a home run to Cervelli.

Lackey says he made another mistake in Cervelli's next plate appearance, during which Lackey drilled Cervelli with a fastball. After the game, Lackey said his intention wasn't to hit Cervelli, but instead he wanted to move the catcher off the top of the plate.

"I definitely wasn't trying to hit him, but I was trying to knock him down for sure," Lackey admitted.
