While the designs on goalie masks may get most of the publicity, the creation of the masks themselves and the cages protecting the goalie's faces receive just as much attention from stars like Ryan Miller or Ed Belfour.

Goalie mask craftsman Gary Warwick Sr. welcomed Sports Illustrated into his workshop and showed off his process for creating a goalie's mask and what exactly goes into sizing it to a player's specifications.

Warwick, who has created masks for Miller and Islanders netminder Al Montoya, also breaks down the history of the mask and how they have evolved from primitive shields to the full-out protection that you see in today's game.
