Report: Red Sox Could Make Run at Carlos Beltran

The Red Sox were one of the many teams linked to Carlos Beltran this past season before the Mets dealt him to the San Francisco Giants prior to the trade deadline. Now that he's a free agent, the Sox might again pursue the veteran outfielder.

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the Sox may make a play for Beltran to become the team's right fielder next season.

J.D. Drew, of course, is a free agent, meaning the Sox' current right-field options are Josh Reddick and Ryan Kalish.

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington has previously stated that the Sox could look to acquire another right fielder, specifically one who hits right-handed. Beltran, a switch-hitter, fulfills both criteria.

Beltran finished this season with a .300 average, 22 home runs and 84 RBIs in 142 games. Heyman also reports that the Giants will look to retain the 34-year-old.
