Steve Gerrard Missed Liverpool-West Brom Game Because of Ankle Infection

Liverpool supporters expecting Steve Gerrard to boss the midfield Saturday were disappointed to learn that he did not make the match-day squad. Kenny Dalglish told LiverpoolFC.tv that an ankle infection was the reason for the club captain's absence.

"Steven Gerrard has an infection in his ankle," the Liverpool manager revealed after his team's 2-0 win.

"Steven was in my mind for the game today but it just flared up. We are off tomorrow, so we'll have a more accurate idea on Monday or Tuesday when we return to training. We will be more accurate next week than what we can be now."

Dalglish rested Gerrard for Wednesday's Carling Cup game with Stoke City, hoping he would lead the Reds against West Brom.

Liverpool was also missing vice-captain Jamie Carragher, who was out with a calf strain. He suffered the injury during Wednesday’s 2-1 win. He was substituted at halftime of that game. Daniel Agger replaced him in the team Saturday.

The Reds return to action next Saturday when they host Swansea City in an English Premier Legue game.
