Bobby Valentine was a surprise candidate for the Red Sox’ managerial opening.

The former Rangers and Mets manager does not have a reputation for using statistical analysis, but the newer, advanced methods of evaluating talent have become a hallmark of the Red Sox organization.

As Red Sox manager, Valentine said he would marry the old school with the new school, while learning from past experiences.
