Luis Suarez answered his critics and ended a lengthy goal drought by scoring the game winner in Saturday's game against Queens Park Rangers. The Liverpool star headed the ball home from close range shortly after halftime.
Charlie Adam provided the service to Suarez on his 47th minute goal. The midfielder tricked his way past Shaun Wright-Phillips on the left side of the QPR penalty area. His move gave him time to accurately deliver a right-footed pass into the goal mouth.
The cross sailed over the heads of two defenders, including Armand Traore, whose leap could not intercept the ball before it reached the criminally unmarked Suarez.
The Uruguayan marksman rose and powerfully headed it past goalkeeper Radek Cerney, who had no chance of stopping it. It was his fifth English Premier League goal of the season.
It ended a personal drought of 315 goal-less minutes for Suarez. His last goal came in Uruguay's 4-0 win over Chile on Nov. 11 (he scored four goals that day). He played three and one half games before scoring again.
Suarez last celebrated a goal with his Liverpool teammates on Oct. 26, when his double at Stoke City ensured LFC's progression in the Carling Cup. A little over four games and 360 minutes had passed since then.
His frustration becomes even more appearent when looking at his barren run in league play. He last scored a league goal in the Oct. 1 Merseyside derby win over Everton. He played in 7 1/2 league games before scoring again.
The last two months have not been kind to the 24-year-old forward. Along with the goal drought, he's endured attacks on his personal and professional reputation and faces two FA charges for on-field incidents.
But Kenny Dalglish praised the Reds' talisman for marking a superb performance with the game-winning goal.
"The headlines don't matter, do they? But there'll be nice headlines for him tomorrow. He scored with a header, which doesn't happen too often, and he played really well."
