Brian Dawkins Announces Retirement From NFL Via Twitter

The only thing missing was the Super Bowl ring.

Brian Dawkins, one of the NFL's best safeties for more than a decade, announced his retirement via Twitter on Monday, ending a successful 16-year career that lacked only a Lombardi Trophy.

Dawkins was selected to eight Pro Bowls and was named First-Team All-Pro on four occasions. He spent his first 13 seasons in Philadelphia before signing with Denver as a free agent prior to the 2009 season.

The 38-year-old safety hit free agency again this offseason, but he'll be calling it quits rather than returning for a 17th season. Dawkins issued the following tweet on Monday, which appeared as a link since it exceeded 140 characters.

"The Lord has blessed me to play in the NFL for 16 years. I would like to thank the Eagles & the Broncos 4 believing In me. I would like 2 thank all my teammates & Coaches that I have been blessed 2 go to battle with. Along with u, the fans 4 helping make my career 1 that i have enjoyed tremendously. In other words. I am announcing my retirement from the NFL. #BBTB"

It's tough to dispute the skill that Dawkins brought to the table year in and year out, and voters may have to give him a long look when deciding whether he deserves enshrinement in Canton.
