For more than a decade Gennaro Gattuso has been an Italian soccer icon. But the A.C. Milan midfielder may be reaching the end of his storied playing career.
Gatusso will be out of contract at the end of the season, and he says he will discuss his future with Milan vice president Adriano Galliani. He plans to retire if Milan (or another club) does not offer him a contract, according to FIFA.com.
"My future? We'll see," Gattuso said. "I will speak with Galliani. I want to play again and if not, I'll stay at home with my children. For me it is important to have a contract so I can play and feel alive."
The 34-year-old has been a key figure at Milan since joining the club in 1999. He has helped win 10 major trophies, including two Serie A and two UEFA Champions League titles. He also played 73 times for Italy's national team, and was a key part of his country's FIFA World Cup winning team in 2006.
Gattuso has been suffering from an eye problem since September 2011, when a clash with a teammate caused a structural issue. It effectively blinded him in the left eye, and limited him to six appearances all season. He may never recover his full vision.
It's unlikely that he will be a part of Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri's plans next season. Other teams will certainly be hesitant about signing the defensive midfielder given his eye issues.
