Darryl Strawberry and Tom Seaver both scooped up World Series rings while playing for the Mets. The competitive fire in each former big leaguer still burns.
Things got a bit awkward when Strawberry was asked during a recent all-time team event whether his 1986 squad or Seaver's 1969 championship group would win if the two teams were matched up with Seaver and Dwight Gooden on the mound. Strawberry said he would've loved to have gotten a piece of Seaver with his Louisville Slugger, which drew an interesting response from the Hall of Famer hurler.
"You don't have any handcuffs on you, do you," Seaver replied, clearly taking a jab at Strawberry's reputation for run-ins with the law.
The comment drew some "oohs" and "ahhs" from those in attendance, followed by a hearty laugh from Seaver, who Deadspin reports was described as "drunk and surly" by one attendee.
But while we can't say for sure whether or not Seaver actually threw back a few cocktails before the event, we can say that his comment was a vicious blow — even if he was joking around with another former Met.
