Checking in at 7-feet, 250 pounds, high school freshman basketball phenom Raekwon Long can take his hoops career to pretty much any college he wants to in just a few short years.
But that’s only if coaches can get him out of the pool, according to MaxPreps.com.
Long, who averaged about 15 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocked shots per game this past season, wants to swim.
“He wants to swim on the swim team,” boys basketball coach Joshua Coley of Garinger High School (Charlotte, N.C.) said. “The problem is, swimming is at the same time as basketball. We’ve talked about letting him compete on the weekends. The meets are usually on Saturdays, but I’m not too sure about that yet.”
Long just turned 16 earlier this year but he has already been invited for unofficial visits to North Carolina, Kentucky, Louisville, Clemson, Charlotte, Duke, and Wake Forest.
“He’s very proud about being a swimmer,” Coley joked. “You can tell him that he can’t dunk, but if you tell him he can’t swim you’ve got an argument on your hands.”
